According to Yamaha USA, this is where you can find the serial number of a grand piano and vertical piano. Where is Piano Model Number Location

Most of the time, the model number is located not far from the serial number as shown in picture below. Another possible location is printed on the plate at the back of the piano. Alternatively, looks for model number in the receipt of purchase if you still have it.

Yamaha vertical pianos produced for USA market have been manufactured in 6 countries and they can be identified through their serial number prefix.

  • Hamamatsu, Japan (serial number without any alphabet prefix)
  • Thomaston, Georgia (serial number begins with “T”)
  • South Haven, Michigan (serial number begins with “U”)
  • Jakarta, Indonesia (serial number begins with “J”)
  • Hangzhou, China (serial number begins with an “H“)
  • Taoyuan, Taiwan (serial number begins with “YT“)

As of Grand Pianos, their manufactured location can be identified through their model. If your grand piano is a GH1G, GH1FP, GC1G, or GC1FP, they were manufactured in Thomaston, Georgia. If your grand piano is a GA1E, DGA1E, GB1, DGB1, GB1K, or DGB1K, your piano was manufactured in Jakarta, Indonesia. Other models was manufactured in Hamamatsu, Japan.
